Do I need a visa?

All citizens of the European Union, Switzerland and Canada require a valid visa to enter Tanzania.

You can apply for several types of visa: multiple-entry, single-entry, work, tourist, etc. Find out well in advance to obtain the visa you want and need to visit Tanzania. To obtain a visa, you need three documents documents compulsory: a valid passport (at least 6 months after the date of return), a passport photo and a photocopy of your travel document (return ticket) or a certificate provided by the travel agency.

Visa on arrival: how does it work?

You can apply for a visa in advance to make sure you have it when you enter the country, but Tanzania also offers visas on arrival. This system has been introduced at Dar-es-Salam, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro airports, as well as at most of the country's border posts.

On the other hand, you will need to pay around 50 US dollars for a visa on arrival, which must be paid in cash and in US dollars. This visa allows only one entry into Tanzania. You need to contact the immigration office at the airport. The visa on arrival, although practical, can also be quite lengthy to obtain. Indeed, it is not uncommon for long queues to form outside the immigration office. So if you want a visa on arrival, you'll need to be patient!

Opting for e-Visa: what are the advantages?

You can also apply for a visa online, but be careful! Apart from a few sections of the form in English, it is exclusively in Swahili! You will need to present a copy of your passport, identity card and any other document that may be required depending on the type of visa you are applying for. You can enter the country with an e-Visa:

  • Kilimanjaro airport
  • at Dar-es-Salaam Julius-Nyerere international airport
  • Namanga land border crossing (border with Kenya)
  • and at the Tunduma land border post (border with Zambia).

This visa costs approximately 45 € for an ordinary (tourist) visa. You can pay for everything online using a bank card.

You can call on a agency who will take care of making your request with the authorities.
