Tanzania is a fascinating country, full of wonders to discover. One of these is Kilimanjaro, a mountain in the north-east of the country rising to over 3,900 metres. Tanzania requires its visitors to apply for a visa to enter the country. What kind of visa do I need to climb Kilimanjaro?
Visa on arrival
To enter Tanzania, it is possible to obtain a visa on arrival from several points in the country. These include Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro airports. Payment can only be made by credit card or cash, and only US dollars are accepted. A visa on arrival costs around $50. From now on, you will need to fill in a visa application form at the airport immigration desk, in addition to requesting an Arrival Declaration Card. This can be a time-consuming procedure, as queues can form and the process is not always straightforward.
This will no longer be possible in January 2025!

The Tanzanian embassy in France no longer issues visas, but invites future visitors to apply for an electronic visa.
e-Visa, a simple and practical solution
To make up for the complexity of applying for a visa on arrival, it is now possible to apply for an electronic visa, better known as an e-Visa. This procedure has been introduced by the Tanzanian authorities, making it quick and easy to obtain a visa to travel to the country. All you have to do is fill in a form including passport details and the personal details of the person applying for the visa.
You must enclose a scanned passport photo and a scan of your passport (please note the following requirements: jpeg or png format, maximum size 300 kb). You must also enclose a copy of your return flight ticket or a travel certificate in PDF format, no larger than one mb. This will cost you around $50, payable on the website. Please note that it will take approximately 2 to 3 weeks to obtain.
